Mary, Queen of Peace: A Mother for Our Troubled World

Knowing Mary: The Meaning Behind Her Titles — Part 2

We live in a world that desperately longs for peace. Across nations, wars and violence continue to destroy lives, displace families, and leave countless people grieving. Within our communities, crime, injustice, and division rob people of their sense of security. And even within our homes, where love and peace should flourish, there are sometimes broken relationships, resentment, anxiety, and unforgiveness.

Despite our remarkable advances in technology, medicine, and communication, humanity continues to struggle with something that cannot be manufactured or purchased: true and lasting peace.

Among the many beautiful titles given to the Blessed Virgin Mary is Queen of Peace. But why do we call her by this title, and what does it mean for us today?

Why Is Mary Called Queen of Peace?

Mary is honoured as Queen of Peace because she is the Mother of Jesus Christ, whom the prophet Isaiah calls the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). Her queenship is inseparable from the kingship of her Son. As the Mother of the King, Mary shares in His glory, not as His equal, but as His humble servant and loving Mother.

The title Queen of Peace is included in the Litany of Loreto, a beautiful prayer through which the Church invokes Mary’s intercession under her many titles. By calling her Queen of Peace, we acknowledge her special relationship with Jesus and ask her to pray that His peace may reign in our hearts, our families, and our world.

Mary is not the source of peace. Jesus is. As He told His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you” (John 14:27). Mary’s mission is always to lead us to Him.

Mary Knew Suffering, Yet Remained Rooted in God

When we look at Mary’s life, we discover that she was no stranger to fear, uncertainty, or suffering. At the Annunciation, she was invited into a future she could not fully understand. Shortly after Jesus’ birth, she and Joseph were forced to flee into Egypt to protect their Child from Herod’s violence. Later, she experienced the terrible anguish of standing beneath the Cross as her beloved Son suffered and died.

Yet through these experiences, Mary remained faithful to God. Her peace was not based on comfortable circumstances or a life free from difficulties. It was rooted in her trust in the Lord and her willingness to surrender herself to His will.

This is an important lesson for us. We sometimes imagine that peace means having no problems, no disagreements, no financial worries, and no suffering. But the peace Jesus offers is much deeper. It is the peace that comes from knowing that, even in life’s darkest moments, we are not abandoned by God.

Mary teaches us that peace is not simply the absence of storms, but the presence of God in the midst of them.

Our Families Need the Peace of Christ

Perhaps one of the greatest needs of our time is peace within our families. Many homes are burdened by financial pressures, strained marriages, misunderstandings between parents and children, and wounds that have remained unhealed for years.

We may pray for an end to wars across the world while allowing resentment, bitterness, and unforgiveness to take root within our own hearts. Yet peace must begin somewhere, and very often, that somewhere is within ourselves and our homes.

Mary invites us to bring these struggles to Jesus, just as she brought the needs of the wedding couple to Him at Cana. Her words to the servants remain her message to every generation: “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5).

If we truly desire peace, we must be willing to live according to the teachings of her Son. We must learn to forgive, to listen, to seek reconciliation, to respect the dignity of others, and to replace selfishness with love. Where there is abuse or violence, genuine peace also requires protection, justice, and safety.

Peace is not merely something we pray for. It is something we are called to practise.

Mary, Queen of Peace, Pray for Our World

Today, as we witness the suffering of innocent people, the struggles of families, the loneliness of the elderly, and the uncertainty facing so many young people, we have every reason to turn to Mary, Queen of Peace, and ask for her maternal intercession.

But we must also remember that Mary’s example challenges us personally. We cannot sincerely ask her to pray for peace while refusing to become instruments of peace ourselves.

Perhaps the question each of us needs to ask is this: Am I contributing to the peace I am praying for, or am I allowing my words, attitudes, and actions to deepen the divisions around me?

Mary’s life reminds us that true peace begins with a heart surrendered to God. Her yes at Nazareth opened her life completely to the Prince of Peace. May our own yes to God allow that same peace to transform our hearts, our relationships, and our communities.

Let Us Pray

Mary, Queen of Peace, loving Mother of Jesus and our Mother, look with compassion upon our troubled world. Pray for nations torn apart by war, for communities wounded by violence, and for families struggling with division and unforgiveness.

Intercede for parents anxious about their children, for those who live in fear, for the lonely, the grieving, and all who have lost hope. Ask your Son to heal wounded hearts, restore broken relationships, and guide those in authority towards justice and peace.

Blessed Mother, teach us to become instruments of the peace for which we pray. Help us to forgive where we have been hurt, to love where there is hatred, and to bring understanding where there is division. Above all, lead us always to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, that His peace may reign in our hearts, our homes, and throughout our world.

Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us. Amen.
