Jesus Explosion

Jesus Explosion 2010 – Friday

On the weekend of July 16th to the 18th 2010, Trinidad and Tobago hosted its eighth annual of Jesus Explosion weekend. This is a retreat weekend that is Eucharist centered and Holy Spirit filled. It is definitely one of the most powerful and life changing experiences you will ever have. Over the years, the themes of each weekend have all been based on the same underlying subject matter; that is, the need to evangelize. This year was no different, with the theme being “Do not be afraid to speak out, nor let yourself be silenced. I AM with you” Acts 18 9 -10. All I can say about Jesus Explosion 2010, is WOW!

When you heard the stories of those who organized the event and the difficulty that they encountered, you could not help but know that God was planning to do a mighty work that weekend, and all glory to God, He did just that. I am quite sure that all who attended, came in as one person and left the weekend as an new creation, a brand new man.

Over the weekend, praise and worship was led by Grace Music Ministry, who as always through their charisma, was able to lead the faithful – who numbered in my estimates, well over 1200 – into the deep praise and worship of the One True and Living God.

As for the speakers for the weekend, they reminded me very much of the era — for those of you who are familiar with the game of cricket — when of the West Indies dominated the sport. When the opposing team got rid of one star batsman, they had quite a number of others that they had to face.

On Friday night Jesus explosion 2010, the first talk was delivered by the ever energetic, vibrant and Spirit-filled Rev. Fr. Ian Taylor. It was one of those sharing that cuts to the very bone and marrow of your being. In his sharing, he challenged the faithful to examine themselves as to why it is so easy to speak out about so many things around us, things that in the light of God are really insignificant. Yet, when it comes to all faith, when it comes to sharing all faith with others, when it comes to sharing Jesus Christ with others, we have great difficulty in doing this. In his sharing, he challenged those in the listening audience to speak out and not be afraid in the name of Jesus

One of the very unfortunate things that I have found is that they are far too many Catholics who find the church to be boring, and in my estimates I believe that they will many there at the Jesus explosion weekend. However if their mindset was not changed of the father Ian Taylor’s sharing, I am absolutely sure it would’ve been after the next speaker who was Fr. Connelius Phillip, a young, vibrant, hands clapping, feet stomping, singing and rapping priest. He dealt with the topic “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid”. This young priest is very much in touch with what is happening around us, and he was able to effectively use this and dream life examples in the delivery of his message, a message that encouraged us as a people to examine our lives, and to turn away and avoid sin at all costs. In his message he told the faithful to have courage, and not be afraid.
