“Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
We sing these words at every Mass.
We hear them on Palm Sunday.
But what do they really mean?
Most of us think Hosanna is simply a joyful shout of praise.
But in its original meaning, it is something far deeper.
1. Hosanna Means: “Lord, Save Us!”
The word Hosanna comes from a Hebrew expression:
“Hoshia na” — which means: “Save us, we pray” or “Save us now.”
This is not just celebration.
It is a cry from the heart.
It is:
- The cry of the broken
- The cry of the sinner
- The cry of a people longing for rescue
So when the crowds on Palm Sunday shouted:
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
They were not just praising Jesus.
They were crying out:
👉 “This is the One—save us!”
2. The Crowd Didn’t Fully Understand
Here is where it becomes very real for us.
The people shouting Hosanna were expecting:
- A political king
- A deliverer from Roman oppression
- A visible, earthly victory
But Jesus came to save them in a much deeper way:
- From sin
- From death
- From eternal separation from God
They cried “Save us!”
But they did not yet understand how He would save them—through the Cross.
And this is why Palm Sunday is so powerful.
Because the same voices that cry Hosanna can later fall silent… or even turn away.
3. Hosanna in the Mass — This Changes Everything
Now here is where it becomes deeply beautiful.
At every Mass, just before the consecration, we proclaim:
“Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts…
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
This is not accidental.
In that moment:
- We join the angels in heaven (“Holy, Holy, Holy”)
- We echo the crowd in Jerusalem (“Blessed is He who comes…”)
- And we cry out again: “Hosanna — Lord, save us!”
But here is the difference:
👉 On Palm Sunday, Jesus was entering Jerusalem
👉 At the Mass, Jesus is about to become truly present on the altar
4. The Connection Is Profound
Palm Sunday and the Mass are deeply connected:
- The crowd welcomed Jesus into the city
- We welcome Him onto the altar
- They laid down palms before Him
- We lay down our hearts before Him
- They cried, “Hosanna!”
- We cry, “Save us!”
But now we know something they did not fully understand:
👉 The One who comes… comes to give His Body and Blood
5. Hosanna Is Personal
When you say Hosanna at Mass, it is not just a line in a prayer.
It is you saying:
- “Lord, save me from my sin”
- “Lord, save my family”
- “Lord, save my situation”
- “Lord, I cannot do this without You”
It is both:
- A cry for mercy
- And a declaration of faith
6. A Question for the Heart
Palm Sunday leaves us with a question:
Will I only cry Hosanna when it feels good…
Or will I stay with Jesus when the Cross appears?
Because the same Jesus we welcome…
Is the same Jesus who gives Himself completely.
Closing Reflection
Today, when you say:
“Hosanna in the highest”
Do not let it pass lightly.
Let it rise from your soul:
👉 “Lord, save me.”
👉 “Lord, I trust You.”
👉 “Lord, come into my life.”
And as He comes…
May we not only welcome Him with our lips,
but remain with Him in love,
all the way to the Cross…
and beyond it.
