The Holy See’s financial systems are reinforced by generosity of the Catholic Church’s members, and with the global financial problems that are being experienced, the Vatican too is experiencing the financial drought.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, the Council of Cardinals responsible for the Research of Organizational and Economic Problems, met at the Holy See, under the leadership of Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who is Pope Benedict XVI’s Secretary of State.  Also in attendance at this meeting were members of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Vatican, the Governorate of Vatican City State, among others.

Collectively, the team looked at reports regarding the combined budget of the Holy See and of the Vatican State.

Afterwards, in a communiqué made on Thursday, the cardinals expressed some measure of satisfaction at the forecasted results.  They also expressed concern that the ongoing economic global financial crises had not even the Vatican which gets its much needed funding from the generosity of the offerings made by Catholic faithful.

In spite of the current economic conditions, the communiqué expressed sincere gratitude for the support received from the faithful and exalted them to continue this good work and noted the re-commitment of members to improvements in the overall management of the Vatican’s resources.

You may recall that from its inception, the Catholic Church has always been dependant on the generosity of its faithful for the administration of its ministries. (Acts 4: 32 – 35)
