Mary, Mother of Divine Grace: What Does This Beautiful Title Mean?
Understanding the Titles of Our Blessed Mother — Part 1
Among the many beautiful titles given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Litany of Loreto is Mother of Divine Grace. But what exactly does this title mean, and why does the Church honour Mary in this way?
To understand this title, we must first understand what divine grace is. Grace is God’s free and undeserved gift of His own life and love to us. It is through grace that we are strengthened to overcome sin, grow in holiness, and live as children of God. Grace is not something we can earn or manufacture. It comes from God through Jesus Christ.
Mary is called Mother of Divine Grace because she is the Mother of Jesus Christ, who is the source of all grace. When the angel Gabriel greeted Mary with the words, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28), he revealed something extraordinary about her. Mary had been uniquely blessed by God and prepared for her mission of bringing the Saviour into the world.
Through her humble yes at the Annunciation, Mary welcomed into her womb Jesus Christ, the very source of divine life. She did not create grace, nor does grace originate from her. Rather, she gave birth to the One through whom God’s saving grace comes to humanity.
But Mary’s relationship with divine grace did not end with the birth of Jesus. From the Annunciation to Calvary, she remained completely open to God’s will. Her life became a beautiful example of what God’s grace can accomplish in a human heart that responds with faith, humility, and love.
And what does this mean for us, her spiritual children?
It means that we have a loving Mother who desires to see us grow closer to Jesus. Just as Mary recognised the needs of the wedding couple at Cana and brought those needs to her Son, she continues to intercede for us. Through her prayers, she asks God to grant us the help we need to overcome temptation, persevere through difficulties, turn away from sin, and grow in holiness.
When we call upon Mary as Mother of Divine Grace, we are not asking her to give us something independently of God. We are asking her to pray for us and help us open our hearts more fully to the grace that comes from Christ alone.
And perhaps that is the greatest lesson of this beautiful title. Mary teaches us not only to ask for God’s grace, but also to cooperate with it. Like her, we are invited to say yes to God, allowing His grace to transform our thoughts, our choices, our relationships, and our lives.
Mary is the Mother of Divine Grace because she gave the world Jesus, the source of grace, and she continues to lead her children to Him.
Let Us Pray
Mary, Mother of Divine Grace, you who were filled with God’s grace and remained faithful to His will, pray for us. Help us to recognise the grace God offers us each day and give us the courage to respond with faith and love. When we are weak, lead us to Jesus, our strength. When we fall into sin, help us to return to His mercy. May our hearts, like yours, remain open to the transforming power of God’s grace. Amen.
Mary, Mother of Divine Grace, pray for us.
