Mary, Full of Grace: The Beautiful Name Given to Her by God

Knowing Mary: The Meaning Behind Her Titles

There are many beautiful titles by which Catholics honour the Blessed Virgin Mary. We call her Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, Mother of Mercy, and Our Lady of Peace, among others.

But perhaps one of the most extraordinary titles given to Mary is also one of the most familiar.

Full of Grace.

Every time we pray the Hail Mary, we repeat these words. Yet how often do we stop to consider what they actually mean?

Where did this title come from? Why was Mary called Full of Grace? And what does her fullness of grace teach us about our own relationship with God?

The answer begins in a small town called Nazareth, with an extraordinary greeting from an angel.

A Greeting That Came from Heaven

In the Gospel of Luke, we read that God sent the Archangel Gabriel to a young virgin named Mary, who was betrothed to Joseph.

Gabriel greeted her with these remarkable words:

“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” — Luke 1:28

Notice something important.

The angel did not begin by addressing her simply as Mary. He addressed her as Full of Grace.

This was not an ordinary compliment. Gabriel was God’s messenger, and his greeting revealed something extraordinary about the woman God had chosen to become the Mother of His Son.

In the original Greek of Saint Luke’s Gospel, the word used is kecharitōmenē, which conveys the meaning of someone who has been endowed with divine grace or favour.

Some Bible translations render the greeting as “highly favoured one” or “favoured one.” The traditional Catholic rendering, “full of grace,” expresses the Church’s understanding of the extraordinary grace God bestowed upon Mary.

Saint John Paul II observed that Gabriel addressed Mary as though Full of Grace were her very name.

What an extraordinary thought! Before Gabriel announced that Mary would become the Mother of Jesus, he acknowledged the wonderful work that God’s grace had already accomplished in her.

What Does It Mean to Be Full of Grace?

Grace is God’s free and undeserved gift. Through grace, God draws us into His life, strengthens us, sanctifies us, and enables us to live in communion with Him.

To say that Mary is Full of Grace means that God had blessed her in a unique and extraordinary way, preparing her for the mission of becoming the Mother of Jesus Christ.

The Catholic Church teaches that Mary was preserved from original sin from the very first moment of her conception. This is the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception.

It is important to understand that Mary did not achieve this holiness through her own power, nor was she independent of the saving work of Jesus.

Quite the opposite.

Mary was redeemed by Jesus Christ in a unique and extraordinary way. By the merits of His saving work, God preserved her from original sin in anticipation of the mission she would fulfil.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this beautiful mystery in paragraphs 490–493.

Mary’s fullness of grace, therefore, is not a declaration of her own greatness apart from God.

It is a declaration of the greatness of what God accomplished in her.

Full of Grace, Yet Humble Before God

Perhaps one of the most beautiful aspects of Mary’s life is that, despite being so extraordinarily blessed, she remained profoundly humble.

When Gabriel announced that she would become the Mother of the Saviour, Mary did not respond with pride or a sense of entitlement.

Instead, she answered:

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)

Here we discover something essential about grace.

Grace does not make us self-important. When we truly cooperate with God’s grace, it draws us into greater humility, love, obedience, and trust.

Mary was full of grace, yet she understood that everything she had received was a gift from God.

Later, in her beautiful prayer known as the Magnificat, she proclaimed:

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.” (Luke 1:46)

Mary did not direct attention towards herself. She glorified the One who had done great things for her.

What Does Mary’s Fullness of Grace Mean for Us Today?

We may never receive the unique mission entrusted to Mary, but every Christian is invited to live in God’s grace.

And this is where Mary’s title becomes personally relevant.

God does not call us to remain trapped in our weaknesses, sins, and past mistakes. He invites us into a life transformed by His love.

Through Baptism, we receive the gift of sanctifying grace. Through prayer, the Eucharist, and the other sacraments, God continues to nourish and strengthen our relationship with Him.

And when we fall into serious sin, the Sacrament of Reconciliation offers us the opportunity to return to His friendship and receive His forgiveness.

Perhaps we should ask ourselves a simple question:

How much room am I making in my life for God’s grace?

Do I allow Him to shape my decisions, my words, my relationships, and my attitudes towards others?

Do I cooperate with His grace when He calls me to forgive someone, resist temptation, help a person in need, or surrender something that is drawing me away from Him?

Mary’s life reminds us that holiness is not simply about doing extraordinary things. It begins with allowing God to work within us.

We are not called to possess Mary’s unique fullness of grace, but we are certainly called to grow in grace and holiness.

And what a beautiful example she gives us!

Hail Mary, Full of Grace

The next time we begin the Hail Mary, perhaps we can pause for just a moment over those familiar words.

“Hail Mary, full of grace…”

We are repeating the greeting of an angel sent by God.

We are acknowledging the extraordinary work of divine grace in the woman chosen to become the Mother of our Saviour.

And we are honouring someone whose entire life points us towards Jesus Christ.

Mary is Full of Grace because God filled her with His grace.

And through her example and maternal intercession, she encourages us to open our own hearts more fully to that same loving God.

May we learn from Mary not merely to admire God’s grace, but to welcome it, cooperate with it, and allow it to transform our lives.

Let Us Pray

Blessed Virgin Mary, Full of Grace, you were chosen by God and prepared by His loving grace to become the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Teach us to recognise that everything good in our lives comes from His generosity and love.

Help us to open our hearts more fully to God’s grace, to turn away from sin, and to respond to His will with the same humility and trust that marked your life.

Intercede for us, dear Mother, that we may grow in holiness, remain faithful to your Son, and become instruments of His love in our world.

Mary, Full of Grace, pray for us. Amen.
