What Is In Your Alabaster Box That You Will Pour Out On Jesus?

In the poignant narrative from the Gospel of Mark, we encounter an unnamed woman who, in a profound act of devotion, poured out costly ointment upon Jesus. Her gesture, though questioned by some, was lauded by Jesus himself as an exemplary act of kindness and foresight.

Consider the significance of this event beyond its historical context. Reflect on the essence of her action – the pouring out of something precious, sacrificially, for the sake of honoring Jesus. It prompts us to ponder: What can we offer to Jesus in our lives that reflects a similar depth of devotion and sacrifice?

It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life, to focus on our own needs and desires, or even to be deterred by societal norms or expectations. However, this passage challenges us to look beyond ourselves and consider how we can pour out our resources, talents, and time in service to Jesus and others.

Perhaps it’s through acts of generosity towards those in need, like the woman’s gift could have been sold for the benefit of the poor. Or maybe it’s through offering our skills and abilities to further the work of spreading the Good News, as Jesus highlighted the eternal significance of her deed.

Each of us has something to give, whether it’s material possessions, talents, time, or simply a willing heart. The challenge laid before us is to examine our lives and ask: What can I offer to Jesus that reflects the sacrificial love demonstrated by the unnamed woman in Bethany?

As we meditate on this passage, may we be inspired to seek opportunities to pour out our lives in service to Jesus and others, knowing that even the smallest act of kindness done in his name carries eternal significance. Let us embrace the challenge to give generously, love sacrificially, and follow wholeheartedly in the footsteps of our Savior.
