Stand Firm: God Is With Us in a Shaking World

Every so often, the Sunday readings line up so perfectly with what is happening around us that it becomes impossible to ignore the voice of God speaking through His Word. This 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C) is one of those moments.

Around the world today, people are living with real fear—fear of war, fear of instability, fear of economic collapse, fear of violence, fear of not knowing what tomorrow will bring. Here in Trinidad and the Caribbean, we are watching the rising tensions between the United States and Venezuela and praying earnestly that peace prevails. We think about Ukraine and the ongoing devastation unleashed by Russia’s aggression. We think about conflicts in Africa, unrest in the Middle East, and the countless innocent people caught in the crossfire of political ambition and human pride.

In many hearts, the words of Jesus feel frighteningly close:
“You will hear of wars and insurrections… Nation will rise against nation… People will betray one another… You will be hated because of my name.”
(Luke 21)

And yet—into this very fear, God speaks a radically different message:

“Do not be afraid.”

“Stand firm.”

“By your perseverance, you will save your lives.”

This is not escapism. This is not wishful thinking. This is God’s Word to His people in times of crisis.

🔥 1. Malachi: God Will Set All Things Right

The first reading from Malachi (3:19–20) is short but powerful. It speaks of a day when evil—real evil—will be dealt with once and for all. Injustice, oppression, violence, corruption, the arrogance of the wicked… none of it will have the last word.

But for those “who fear the name of the Lord”—for those who remain faithful, humble, trusting—the prophet promises something beautiful:

“The sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.”

In a world wounded by pride and power struggles, God promises healing, justice, and wholeness. He reminds us that He alone is God, and He alone will have the final say in human history.

🌊 2. Psalm 98: The Lord Comes as a Just Judge

Psalm 98 declares:

“The Lord comes to rule His people with fairness.”

This is not a threat—it is a comfort.
God does not judge like human beings do.
He does not take sides based on national borders.
His justice is perfect, merciful, and filled with truth.

While the world’s leaders flex their power, God calls His people to sing:

“Sing joyfully to the Lord… for He comes, He comes to rule the earth.”

Why sing?
Because when we lift our voices in praise, we shift our eyes from fear to faith, from headlines to hope, from instability to the One who cannot be shaken.

🕊 3. 2 Thessalonians: Stay Faithful and Steady

St. Paul speaks a word that is surprisingly practical for us today:

“Do not grow weary in doing good.”

In uncertain times, people tend to lose focus.
Fear can make us selfish.
Anxiety can make us numb.
Chaos can make us careless with our responsibilities.

But Paul urges us:
Stay steady.
Stay prayerful.
Stay committed to your calling.
Do not stop living as disciples of Christ, no matter what is happening around you.

The world needs stable, faithful Christians right now more than ever.

⛅ 4. Luke 21: Do Not Be Afraid—God Is With You

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks plainly about troubled times:

  • Wars
  • Natural disasters
  • Betrayal
  • Hatred
  • Persecution

But then He delivers one of the most remarkable promises in all of Scripture:

“Do not be terrified.”

“I Myself will give you wisdom.”

“Not a hair on your head will be destroyed.”

“By your perseverance you will save your lives.”

Jesus is not telling us that troubles won’t come.
He is telling us that He will be with us IN the trouble, and that if we stand firm, cling to Him, and remain faithful, nothing can truly harm us—not even death.

This is the difference between fear and faith:

  • Fear says: “Look at what is happening!”
  • Faith says: “Look at who is with me through it all.”

Jesus does not promise a painless journey—He promises a victorious one.

🌿 What Is God Saying to Us Today?

In a world filled with anxiety about war, political tensions, violence, and instability, God is saying to His people:

Remain faithful. I am still God. I am still in control. Nothing escapes My sight. Do not be afraid—trust Me.

He is asking us to:

  • Stand firm in prayer
  • Stand firm in faith
  • Stand firm in hope
  • Stand firm in love
  • Stand firm in righteousness
  • Stand firm in compassion
  • Stand firm in Christ

This is our anchor in the storm.

🕯 Our Call to Action: What Must We Do?

1. Pray for peace—earnestly and persistently.

Not just in general, but specifically:
For Trinidad & Tobago, the Caribbean, Venezuela, the US, Ukraine, and every land threatened by war.

2. Root yourself in Christ.

Turn away from fear-driven living.
Return to the sacraments.
Make time for Scripture.
Guard your heart.

3. Live responsibly and faithfully.

Do not give in to laziness, bitterness, or despair.
Be a light in your home, workplace, parish, and nation.

4. Support those who are suffering.

War, displacement, violence, poverty—these touch real lives.
Be generous. Be compassionate. Be present.

5. Speak peace, not panic.

Do not spread fear.
Do not amplify rumors.
Be a voice of calm.

6. Persevere. No matter what.

This is Jesus’ final word to us today:
“By your endurance, you will save your souls.”

Hold on to Christ.
Do not let fear decide your future.
God is with us.
And if God is with us—who can be against us?

🌟 Final Encouragement

We do not know what tomorrow holds.
But we absolutely know who holds tomorrow.

God is not shaken.
God is not surprised.
God is not overwhelmed.

And neither will we be—if we stand firm in Him.
