A Life Poured Out: St. Maximilian Kolbe and the Call to Radical Forgiveness

Today, the Church honors St. Maximilian Kolbe — a man whose life was a living echo of Christ’s words on love, mercy, and total self-gift. Born in 1894 in Poland, Maximilian was a Franciscan priest who founded the Militia Immaculatae (Army of the Immaculate) to bring souls to Christ through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was a tireless missionary, a publisher, and a passionate defender of the faith, using the printing press and radio to proclaim the Gospel in creative and far-reaching ways.

In 1941, Maximilian was arrested by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz. There, when a fellow prisoner was condemned to die, leaving behind a wife and children, Fr. Maximilian stepped forward and volunteered to take his place. In the starvation bunker, he led prayers and hymns, strengthening the faith of those around him until he was finally martyred with a lethal injection on August 14, 1941.

Tying His Life to the Readings

  • First Reading – Joshua 3:7–17: Just as the Israelites followed the Ark into the Jordan and trusted God to lead them into the Promised Land, St. Maximilian stepped into the “Jordan” of suffering and death with complete trust. He saw beyond the immediate darkness to the eternal Promised Land of Heaven.
  • Gospel – Matthew 18:21 – 19:1: Jesus’ call to forgive “seventy-seven times” was not just about words, but about living mercy in the deepest sense. St. Maximilian forgave his captors and gave his life for another — a man he barely knew — becoming a living parable of Christ’s boundless mercy.
  • Psalm 114 reminds us that God’s power delivers His people through impossible situations. For Maximilian, that deliverance was not escape from death, but the grace to face it with unshakable peace and love.

St. Maximilian Kolbe’s life is a challenge to us: to live so fully in the love of Christ that we can forgive freely, serve selflessly, and trust completely, even in the face of great cost.
