When God Is Writing a Bigger Story – Trusting Unconditionally In God
Trusting Him Even When Nothing Makes Sense
One of the most powerful stories in Sacred Scripture is the story of Joseph and his brothers in the Book of Genesis.
Joseph was the beloved son of Jacob. His father loved him deeply and even gave him a beautiful robe — a sign of that special affection. But instead of inspiring joy among his brothers, it stirred jealousy, resentment, and envy in their hearts.
What followed was tragic.
They plotted against him.
At first they wanted to kill him.
Then they decided instead to sell him as a slave.
Imagine Joseph in that moment.
Betrayed.
Abandoned.
Sold like property.
Taken far away from home.
If there was ever a moment when a person might feel that God had forgotten them, this was surely one.
And yet… God had not forgotten Joseph.
Not for one second.
When We Cannot See What God Sees
From Joseph’s perspective, everything looked like a disaster.
His own brothers had betrayed him.
He was taken into slavery in Egypt.
Later he would even be falsely accused and thrown into prison.
At every step of the journey, it would have been easy to ask:
“Lord, where are You?”
But what Joseph could not see in those painful moments was that God was preparing something far greater than he could imagine.
God was not absent.
God was working quietly behind the scenes, guiding every event toward a purpose that Joseph himself could not yet understand.
This is often how God works in our lives.
God Sees the Whole Picture
We see the present moment.
God sees the entire story.
We see the pain.
God sees the purpose.
We see confusion.
God sees redemption.
Years later, Joseph would rise from slavery and imprisonment to become one of the most powerful leaders in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself.
And when a terrible famine struck the land, guess who came to Egypt searching for food?
Joseph’s brothers.
The very ones who had betrayed him.
And in that moment Joseph spoke words that reveal one of the deepest truths in the entire Bible:
“You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.”
(Genesis 50:20)
What his brothers intended for harm, God transformed into salvation.
Joseph’s suffering became the very path through which God saved many lives — including the lives of the same brothers who had betrayed him.
A Powerful Lesson for Lent
Lent invites us into a deeper trust in God.
It is easy to trust God when everything is going well.
But true faith appears when life becomes difficult.
When prayers seem unanswered.
When circumstances seem unfair.
When the road ahead makes no sense.
Joseph teaches us that God is still working, even when we cannot see it.
Your struggles are not wasted.
Your suffering is not meaningless.
Your story is not over.
God may be using the very thing that feels like a setback to prepare something far greater than you can currently imagine.
Trust Beyond Understanding
The wisdom of Scripture reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and lean not on your own understanding.”
(Proverbs 3:5)
There will be moments in life when we simply do not understand what God is doing.
But faith means trusting not because we understand, but because we know who God is.
He is faithful.
He is merciful.
And He is always working for the good of those who love Him.
Even when the path passes through betrayal, suffering, or confusion.
A Lenten Invitation
Perhaps right now you are walking through something that makes no sense.
A loss.
A disappointment.
A betrayal.
A struggle that seems unfair.
The story of Joseph reminds us that God is still writing the story.
And what looks like the end of the road may actually be the beginning of something greater.
Trust Him.
Even when you cannot see the outcome.
Because the God who turned Joseph’s suffering into salvation is the same God who is working in your life today.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
when life becomes difficult and confusing,
help us to trust You with all our hearts.
When we cannot understand what You are doing,
give us the faith to believe that You are still at work.
Teach us to surrender our fears,
our doubts, and our frustrations into Your hands.
Like Joseph, help us to remain faithful
even in the moments of suffering.
And may we one day look back and see
how Your loving providence was guiding us all along.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
