As May draws to a close, we would be remiss not to turn our hearts and words toward the greatest woman who ever livedMary, the Mother of God. In every age, culture, and generation, countless women have left their mark on history. But none compares to the young Jewish girl from Nazareth who said yes to God and became the Mother of our Savior, and indeed, the Mother of us all.

Why is Mary the Greatest Woman Ever?

Let us explore this holy mystery from every angle—through prophecy, scripture, and the lived witness of her life.

Foretold by the Prophets

Mary was not a random choice in God’s plan. The prophets of old pointed to her coming, veiled in mystery but radiant in significance.

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14

Centuries before the Annunciation, Isaiah prophesied that a virgin would give birth to God-With-Us. That virgin was Mary—chosen, preserved, and prepared by God from the beginning of time.

Her Fiat: A Yes That Changed History

When the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary with the message that she would bear the Son of the Most High, all of heaven must have held its breath. Would she say yes?

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
Luke 1:38

This response—her fiat—was not automatic. It was free, courageous, and total. In that moment, she became the bridge between heaven and earth. Her yes undid the no of Eve. Her consent welcomed the Savior into the world.

Mary: The First and Most Perfect Disciple

Some might misinterpret Jesus’ words when He was told His mother and brothers were waiting for Him:

“My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
Luke 8:21

Far from distancing Himself from Mary, Jesus was affirming her greatness. Who more than Mary heard the word of God and kept it? Who more than Mary lived God’s word with her whole being? Jesus wasn’t denying her motherhood—He was defining it by discipleship.

Mary was His mother not just by blood, but by faith. She was the first to believe in Him, even before He was conceived. She believed the angel’s message. She nurtured the Word made flesh in her womb and in her heart.

Mary vs. Modern Ideals: A Woman Like No Other

In today’s world, the image of the “ideal woman” is often shaped by social media feeds, celebrity culture, and consumerism. The modern woman is pressured to be everything—flawless in appearance, wildly successful in career, perfectly composed in motherhood, and effortlessly admired.

And yet, in chasing these ideals, many women find themselves exhausted, anxious, disconnected from their true identity. Society often measures greatness by external gains: money, followers, status, style, or applause.

But then we look at Mary.

She had none of those things.
No Instagram platform.
No lavish wardrobe.
No corporate accolades.
She never traveled the world.
She wasn’t even “recognized” in her time.

And yet—she is the most exalted woman in all of history.

“He has looked with favor on His lowly servant… From now on all generations will call me blessed.”
Luke 1:48

Mary was humble, hidden, and holy. She wasn’t chasing greatness—God bestowed it upon her because she was willing to let Him be great in her.

While the world says, “Promote yourself”,
Mary says, “Be the handmaid of the Lord.”

While the world says, “Trust in your own truth”,
Mary says, “Let it be done to me according to His word.”

While the world says, “You’re only as valuable as your achievements”,
Mary says, “My soul magnifies the Lord.”

Modeling Our Lives After Mary

When we choose to model ourselves after Mary, something profound happens:

  • Our self-worth is no longer tied to the world’s standards, but to God’s love.
  • Our femininity becomes radiant with grace, not pressure.
  • Our motherhood—whether physical or spiritual—becomes rooted in presence and prayer, not perfection.
  • We discover the beauty of surrender, silence, and deep joy in God.

Mary doesn’t demand that we be passive or silent. On the contrary—she was a woman of strength, action, and intercession. But she shows us that our greatest power lies in saying yes to God, even in the unknown.

To model after Mary is not to retreat from the world—but to transform it from within, by carrying Christ into every space of our lives.

And in a world desperate for meaning, dignity, and love—a Marian heart may be the boldest witness of all.

A Woman of Silence, Prayer, and Depth

“But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.”
Luke 2:19

How often in Scripture we find Mary silent—but present. At the manger. At the Temple. At the Cross.

She didn’t always understand, but she trusted. She pondered. She prayed. In our world that prizes instant answers and loud opinions, Mary shows us the path of interior depth and communion with God.

Mary at the Cross and Beyond

Mary’s greatness wasn’t confined to joyful moments. She stood at the foot of the Cross—faithful when almost everyone else fled.

And what does Jesus do with His last breath? He gives her to us:

“Behold your mother.”
John 19:27

At that moment, Mary became the Mother of the Church, the mother of every believer.

She was also present in the Upper Room at Pentecost. Her maternal presence helped shape the early Church, and she continues to guide us today.

Why Does This Matter to Us?

Mary is not just a historical figure. She is our mother, our intercessor, our model. She teaches us:

  • How to say yes to God even when the path is unclear.
  • How to ponder God’s will in prayerful silence.
  • How to stand firm in suffering.
  • How to live as disciples who trust completely in the Lord.

Honoring Her Rightly

To call Mary “the greatest woman ever” is not to diminish others. It is to recognize what God has done in her—and what He wants to do in us if we, too, say yes.

In honoring Mary, we honor Jesus. As St. Louis de Montfort said:

“We never give more honor to Jesus than when we honor His Mother.”

So, even though May is almost over, it’s never too late to turn to her and say:

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
Mary, our Mother, we love you!
Teach us to trust, to pray, and to follow Jesus—just like you did.

Closing Prayer: Mary, Our Mother and Model

O Mary, Most Holy,
The Greatest Woman Ever—
Chosen before time, full of grace,
Humble in heart, and mighty in faith—
We honor you today with love and reverence.

You believed when it was hard to believe.
You said yes when the cost was everything.
You pondered in silence when the world shouted for answers.
You stood firm when the sword pierced your soul.
And you trusted, always, in the will of God.

Pray for us, O Mother.

In a world confused about love, teach us self-giving.
In a world drunk on pride, teach us humility.
In a world chasing noise, teach us how to ponder.
In a world afraid of sacrifice, teach us the courage of your fiat.

We ask your intercession, dear Mother,
for every woman striving to understand her worth,
for every mother raising children in truth,
for every young heart searching for beauty and meaning,
and for all of us who long to follow Jesus more fully.

Wrap us in your mantle of grace.
Lead us by the hand to your Son.
Form us into true disciples, as you were.
And when we fall, whisper again to our hearts:
“Do whatever He tells you.”

Mary, Mother of God,
Mary, our Mother,
Pray for us now,
And lead us always to Jesus.

Amen.
