What is meant by the First Commandment?

 By the First Commandment, “I am the Lord your God. You shall not have strange gods before me”, we are commanded to:

  • Put God first in our lives ahead of all others.
  • Make quality time every day to pray.
  • We must love God more that anything and anyone else.
  • We must be open to the will of God for our lives.
  • We must renounce all superstitious practices such as witchcraft, occults, belief in horoscopes etc.
  • We must be open and submissive to the Word of God at work in our lives.
  • We must try to avoid living on mortal sin, and must not receive the Holy Eucharist in a state of mortal sin.
  • We should attend confession regularly and ensure it is an honest confession.
