Apologetics – Rules To Follow

Are there any fundamental rules for doing apologetics?

We should constantly keep in mind 1 Peter 3:15 which states, “Always be prepared to make a defense to anybody who calls you to consider the hope that is in you …” Always be prepared Scripture informs us! So, how can we “constantly be prepared” to make a defense of our Faith?

Rule # 1: Pray. Pray to the Holy Spirit. Pray that He will provide you the courage to share your Faith and the knowledge to pick your words very carefully and beneficially.

Rule # 2: You don’t need to understand everything today! Just find out a little bit more about your Faith each and every day. Check out Scripture. Read the Catechism. Hear apologetics tapes. Review books on or by the Saints. Learn a bit at a time.

Guideline # 3: Luke 5:10, “Do not hesitate, henceforth you will be catching guys. “Jesus said this to Peter, but He’s additionally stating it to us. Will you make mistakes? Will you enter tight spots … when you begin sharing your Faith with others? Obviously you will, however Peter made errors! He got into tight spots. Yet, Jesus informed Peter not to be scared. Why? Because if we are sincere in our desire to share the honest truth with others … to share Jesus Christ with others … then Jesus will discover a way to make something good come out of even our blunders.

Rule # 4: Always see a question about your Faith, or even an attack on your Faith, as an opportunity – a possibility to share the fact. Stay calm and remain determined to bring light into darkness.

Rule # 5: Don’t get disappointed. Fairly frequently Catholics get annoyed by what I call the doctrinal dance … you get inquired about Purgatory, Mary, the Pope, the Sacraments all in fast fire succession. Prior to you could answer one concern, you’re asked an additional. Simply keep securely, however gently, directing the discussion back to one topic till you’ve said all you wish to state … then move on.

Guideline # 6: Very, essential! Never ever hesitate to state, “I don’t know,” when asked a question about your Faith. Don’t try to “wing it.” Nonetheless, constantly follow, “I have no idea,” with, “But, I will figure out and get back to you.” And see to it you do!

If you follow these guidelines, you will be prepared the next time God puts you in a position to discuss and defend your Faith.
